Off-Roading
Off-Roading Mount Lemmon
For those who prefer four wheels to two feet, Mount Lemmon offers rugged backroads and trails that showcase the wilder side of the Santa Catalinas. Whether you’re driving a high-clearance vehicle, an ATV, or a side-by-side, off-roading here rewards you with remote vistas, historic routes, and a sense of exploration you won’t find on the paved highway.
Old Mount Lemmon Road
Before the Catalina Highway was built, Old Mount Lemmon Road was the only way to reach Summerhaven. Today, this rugged dirt road still climbs the northeast side of the mountain from Oracle, winding through desert scrub, oak woodlands, and eventually into pine forest near the summit. Though rough in places, it’s a favorite for off-road enthusiasts looking for both challenge and history. The views along the way stretch endlessly across the San Pedro River Valley.
Control Road
Another classic off-road route, the Control Road connects Oracle with the upper reaches of Mount Lemmon. This trail offers a mix of switchbacks, wash crossings, and forested sections — a true test for capable vehicles. It’s also a scenic way to access the higher elevations without the paved highway.
Nearby Trails & Backroads
Beyond Old Mount Lemmon Road, the Catalina Mountains are laced with jeep trails and dirt roads that lead to hidden canyons, remote campgrounds, and breathtaking overlooks. Many of these routes intersect with Coronado National Forest lands, so a forest pass may be required for parking or staging.
Whether you’re tackling the historic climb up Old Mount Lemmon Road or exploring the network of forest backroads, off-roading offers a thrilling way to experience the mountain’s diverse landscapes. Just be sure to check conditions, carry plenty of water, and only attempt these routes with a suitable vehicle.
